No More Surface Phobia

26.01.21

We take extra care in the detail of our designs. We consider a careful selection, by looking into all the different elements and how our products and materials can be beneficial to people; improving their everyday lives by finding solutions that combat the current challenges. With the ever-increasing necessity for hygiene and concern surrounding surface touch points, we adapted our brand to continually align itself with the current and changing situation and to the needs of people – making this our number one priority when making design decisions. We challenge todays design against the new normal.

Stainless Steel Most of our products are produced from AISI 304 stainless steel, containing silver elements. The material composition and antibacterial properties of the AISI 304 stainless steel have been researched by 2010 Elsevier B.V. It is widely used in medical practices as well as in hospitality. This material is not only antibacterial and nanomagnetic, but also high strength and corrosion resistant making our products adaptable to every environment. Silver ions and compounds are able to destroy the cell walls and cell membranes of the bacteria, stopping their growth and preventing the spread of viruses, including COVID-19.   Copper Copper is a metal that has been used for many centuries by different cultures and was the first metal to be used by man. It has been used for many different functions. The Egyptian medical text written between 2600-2200 B.C. describes the use of copper as a product to sterilise chest wounds and drinking water. Ions in copper are antiviral and antibacterial. They are able to kill 99.9% of bacteria within two hours. However, copper is a difficult metal to maintain due to corrosion. Therefore, nowadays it is used a lot less. Yet there is now an alternative for copper surfaces – which is PVD coating. This can be infused with copper ions to give surfaces the same antibacterial properties as pure copper, but whilst preserving the same finishing look.       PVD Coating All of our stainless-steel products are coated in a thin layer of PVD coating that provides extra protection as well as a beautiful decorative finish. PVD coating makes the surface strong, durable, scratch free and corrosion free. We have a wide range of finishes ensuring that we can suit every need. All the while, the thin layer of nanotechnology film reduces the spread of surface bacteria and virus transmission making the surfaces contamination free as well as hypoallergenic. The PVD coating can be combined with silver or copper ions to improve the efficiency of antimicrobial activity. We consider the significance of every touch point by creating a solution to ensure that all our surfaces are as safe as possible and contamination free. This not only makes our products aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and prepared for every challenge.     Passivation of Stainless Steel In the mid-1800s Christian Friedrich Schonbein discovered that after he dipped iron into a concentrated nitric acid, he found that the iron had little, or no chemical reactivity compared to iron that was not dipped in the same way. This process was named passivation. The passivation of stainless steel is used to prevent corrosion, as the nitric acid or citric acid removes free ions from the surface. This gives our products a protective layer making them stronger and more durable, and also removes contamination from the surface, reducing the required cleaning time. Passivates come in the colour variations of clear, blue, yellow or black; each giving a different visual effect. TSL uses passivation for our Aerofoil legs to create a strong and long-lasting solution.     Corian Dr Donald Slocum was the Dupont Scientist who invented Corian in 1967. TSL has discovered the effectiveness of this in its modular bathroom systems. Corian is composed from a mixture of 1/3rd acrylic polymer and 2/3rds natural minerals, and comes in a palette of different colour variations, shapes, and sizes. Where hygiene conscious, it is the best choice; non-porous, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic. Easy to clean and maintain, Corian does not support the growth of mould or mildew. The strong, solid, and durable surface provides the ultimate antimicrobial solution for sterile surfaces. It is perfect to use in every environment and can be adapted to any design. We endeavour to create solutions for both hygienic and sterile surfaces and systems, that offer functionality and safety in every environment. Our material choices are the answer for crafting a composition into a design symphony.

We are the change. We are the new normal. We are the solution. We are The Splash lab.
