Sustainability through longevity

Making the right products from the right materials for their environment

Stainless steel

Steel taps, soap dispensers, hand dryers, and accessories have robust recycling prospects. TSL’s suppliers are committed to sourcing raw materials responsibly and robust infrastructure ensures it is easy to renew material after their life cycle is exhausted. Stainless steel is an ideal material for the moisture-rich commercial washroom where corrosion, patination, and damage are key strains on installed product.

Solid surface

Solid surface is low-VOC, which can positively contribute to BREEAM or LEED ratings. A homogenous, non-porous material, it is ideal material for the commercial washroom where it can withstand damages or staining, and be seamlessly repaired if necessary, far outperforming porcelain products in this hardwearing application. Beyond the benefits of traditional solid surface, our basins are compatible with materials like Polygood and Durat, which offer 100% recycled content, with a fully circular life cycle. Because of this material’s durability and renewability, The Splash Lab is able offer a 10-year warranty on our solid surface basins.

≥ 8% recycled content
HiMacs Alpine White, our stock finish, contains a minimum of 8% recycled content, the highest of any true white finish.

Our core range is fully CO2 declared

Third party-verified EPDs cover the resources, energy, and emissions impact during the life cycle of each of our products. Please contact us for assistance interpreting EPDs.

Water is a precious resource

And nowhere is this so clear as in the washroom

TSL offers our full range of taps with low flow rates that meet BREEAM and LEED recommendations via a modular aerator system. This system keeps our taps compliant without sacrificing the pleasure of the handwashing experience, thus maintaining our connection with this vital element.

Digital spaces powered by green energy from renewable sources

As a technology-forward brand, The Splash Lab is committed to ensuring responsibility in digital spaces. Our server sites are powered by green energy from renewable sources and use a passive cooling technique that renders them carbon negative. We can therefore provide robust online resources without increasing this too-often invisible strain on the planet.

We design for change

Washrooms should reflect the society they serve, goes the saying. But what if washrooms could help us imagine the society we deserve? TSL believes in creating products for spaces that push past conventional wisdom, and in turn inspire more just and functional norms.

Inclusivity

Inclusive design is a key vector in the washroom space. Disabilities both visible and otherwise impact how we use washrooms in safety and comfort. Washroom products can optimise for sensory environment, navigability, and physical safety. Evolved, human-led washroom design can also lessen social anxieties to make allowance for important aspects of personal care like ablutions and breastfeeding. Better washrooms in commercial and public spaces allow all people to participate in their communities in comfort and dignity.

Repair = reuse

Beyond their resource-conscious materials, our products are 100% serviceable at the part level. All TSL products sport a mechanical, rather than fused construction, so they can be taken apart, re-assembled, and retuned. We are committed to unlimited ongoing customer support in this process to ensure our products live out their full life cycle in working order with a dedicated service team.

Standards

TSL products facilitate many different sustainability and human welfare standards. Learn more about how each functions in the washroom space below.

BREEAM

BREEAM is the UK’s benchmark sustainability standard, rating a building’s performance according to a series of grades. Individual products can contribute points towards a BREEAM rating, but are not BREAM-certified themselves, as this holistic standard looks at the built environment overall, as well as considers the building in context – like its proximity to transit options for tenants and the distance building materials travelled to the installation site. BREEAM also considers wellness dimensions beyond environmental performance.

LEED

Like BREEAM, LEED assesses both new, in-use, and refurbished buildings. BREEAM adds a wellness dimension, whereas LEED is almost exclusively a sustainability-based framework. Where LEED breaks its criteria down by usage, BREEAM standards are simply structured around new or existing builds. There are three main areas of concern for basins and sanitaryware in the washroom: Indoor Air Quality – solid surface basins are low-VOC Water conservation – taps are sold with a variety of aerators to achieve LEED-complying flow rates Recyclable materials – stainless steel accessories and fixtures contain roughly 30% recycled content. While LEED as a USA-led initiative, it finds application in EU projects.

WELL Standard

The internationally recognised WELL standard concerns the human dimensions of a project, and rates buildings holistically based on its ability to satisfy certain design for wellness criteria. For sanitaryware, these standards are mainly interactive, meaning they address zones created by the interaction of two products, like the water column created by the distance from a tap spout to the bottom of a basin. WELL standard also mandates HEPA filters for hand dryers.

DDA Doc M

The Disability Discrimination Act established protections for people with mental, physical, sensory, or intellectual disabilities in the United Kingdom. The building regulation that governs how this is applied in the washroom is Document M, Doc M for short. This code establishes approved layouts and types of accessibility accommodations for people of any ability to safely use washrooms. These include prescribed mounting heights, relative mounting heights, special accessories like grab bars, and minimum dimensions. DDA compliance happens at the product level, the interior design level, and again at installation, requiring a team of knowledgeable professionals and dependable products to create a scheme with effortless access for all.

WRAS

Of paramount importance to plumbers and installers, WRAS regulations govern the safety of running water sources in the commercial space. For TSL, WRAS concerns both showers in end of journey facilities as well as taps in standard washrooms.

RED LIST

The Living Building Challenge’s “Red List” assesses a product’s material composition for the presence of harmful compounds. Countertop materials and basins are the primary area of concern for washrooms. Solid surface, a low-VOC material that contributes to a healthy interior air quality can be assumed to be red list free, and most brands are certified. HiMacs and Corian, our main material suppliers, as well as recycled solid surface suppliers like Durat carry certification from LBC.

Environmental Product Declaration

An independently conducted and certified analysis of carbon usage during a product’s life cycle from material supply chain to post-consumer stages. Unlike the other standards highlighted on this page, EPDs present data, rather than issue a rating. They offer the most complex dimension on a product’s environmental impact, allowing Sustainability Managers and other compliance officers to make informed decisions about products at a micro level. The majority of the TSL range is covered under categorised EPDs, available for download here. Please contact our team for assistance interpreting carbon data.

Ska

Ska is an accreditation that certifies both the holistic success of projects and individual products (via the application for a label). The scheme concerns non-residential fit-outs only, not new construction and its designations are meant a tool for end users - rather than designers - to more uniformly assess the sustainability practices at work in buildings of diverse origin, style, and use. In the washroom, most water-consuming products that offer benefits for LEED and BREEAM will also meet Ska requirements.

NABERS

An Australian standard now finding new application in the UK, NABERS is seen as an increasingly viable means by which to evaluate commercial buildings. The NABERS emphasis on ongoing compliance will have a powerful impact as the UK presses towards its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Like BREEAM, it is a holistic scheme that addresses energy, water, waste performance, and indoor environment quality as affected by air purity and lighting. NABERS certification requires an initial audit as well as compliance checks to ensure the building maintains or exceeds the standards set at handover.
