Commissioned by CBRE and designed by Shlemmer Algaze Associates, The Plaza at 1800 & 1840 Century Park East are two office towers that have recently been extensively remodeled to achieve LEED Silver status. Located at Century Park East and Santa Monica Boulevard, The Plaza is close to both Century City and Beverly Hills in Los Angeles.
The largest design challenge within the project was to make the sinks "float", meaning the Monolith would need a 1 inch space around the perimeter. To make this happen, several points needed to be considered, primarily the support system for the sink. As the sinks would weigh around 200lb and would need to be fully supported through the wall behind, site consultations around the necessary structural considerations were required to realise this concept without compromising on the design intent provided by CBRE Project Management and the design team at SAA.
Working within the modular Monolith system, a solution was created by crafting a customized adaption to the steel brackets, which enabled the slab to sit off the wall. To ensure there is no wood rot or swelling from a timber support system, the Monolith is made from Corian and steel only.
